I carved out a new belly for the mermaid from memory foam. It's a great foam to sculpt with and leaves a really nice finish- I'm wondering wether I might take a razor to it and just shave off any tiny lumps and bumps.

And little monkey had an operation in his back and head today to fit the operating rods in place.

Pins  hold open the 'skin' on his back to keep it clear of the hole
made for rod (like in the back of head).

Leggies! I have legs! Oh I'm so excited by this. They are so cute! I love the feeling that creating something that works gives me. Ahhhh bliss!

I also had to cut his body at the waist and add some foam as he looked a wee bit out of proportion.

 

And added some plaited leather chord to make his flexible neck...

I added another bit of foam to make his head rounder

right hand side I used upholstery foam
better to use the hard foam though.

I brought some great fabric via the leggings section in Primarni (Primark), the leggings in there are disgusting as clothing but the fabric is great for puppets. I found some suedette leggings and thought they'd be perfect for the Monkey....which they are.

I stitched the toes individually by retrofitting- i did it quite tightly, usually you measure the fabric to 3x the width but I did it slightly less so it would shape around the wire. It took absolutely ages but its definitely improved my fine hand stitching.

Monkey fabrication

So after the lovely Paul Spooner kindly gave me a block of insulation foam I started making the Monkey...

I made a scale drawing so I could then cut out blocks from foam and carve away the form.

Advice form Paul Spooner

I went to see Mechanical Cabaret genius Paul Spooner while back in Cornwall for some advice on making a moving eye mechanism and a moveable jaw for Pip.

I went home and tried to make my own rough ones out of wire, beads and split pins....

....Its fiddley at a small scale and I would have to make a more accurate gimbal- Paul suggested making then his way by cutting the gimbal out of brass on a ban saw but I have seen simpler ones by Pickled Image that is made from a wooden frame and wire and that are more like the drawings above in design.

Just thought I'd see what makes a good eye....
